It is called the Fashion Oscars, it exists since 1948, and it is hosted by the great Anna Wintour: the Met is a symbol in the fashion world and in Le Banana we’ll tell you everything you must know to fully enjoy the coming edition of this unique event.
The gala is celebrated at the impressive Metropolitan Museum of Art and it gathers together celebrities and renowned people of the fashion industry, all of whom must respect a specific dress code. In 2016, the instruction was: “Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” and production technological advances were the leitmotiv of the event. This year, the dress code is inspired by Rei Kawakubo, the mythical designer of Comme Des Garcons.
In fact, this edition was named “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between”. Kawakubo studied history of art and came into the fashion world just by chance, with the dream of creating what she wanted to wear, and eventually she became a legendary icon.
Without any doubt, Japan will be one of the drivers of this gala, which will take place next Monday. Three days after the event, the Museum will launch an exhibition of Rei Kawakubo in which people will be able to enjoy the best works of her career.
As every year, the gala is a great opportunity to discover the designers chosen by celebrities and see both the trends that are coming and the things that must never be done in fashion.
This year, the mythical Vogue’s editor in chief, Anna Wintour, has two hosts, Katy Perry and Pharrell will be in charge of musicalizeing this long awaited fashion celebration.
Of course it is also important to mention the main aim of the gala: raising funds for Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, located at New York city.
Another detail? Rei Kawakubo is the second person that will be honored at a Met Gala in life. The first one had been the great Yves Saint Laurent, in 1983.
To live the countdown of the gala we invite you to watch “First Monday in May” in Netflix, where Anna Wintour and all her team show us in first person how it is to organize an event of this kind.
