Lollapalooza 14th edition finished last weekend. Hundreds of artists drew in more than 400.00 fans during four days full of rock and roll, pop, hip hop and lots of fun, learn here in Le Banana all the details of the final day of the most important music festival of the Windy City!
Giant Park field was packed with teens and millennials all along the four days and they were the ones who imposed their music preferences: a lot of hip hop, trap, indie rock, female pop and dance that were played and sang in the middle of thousands of super instagrammable lights and fireworks. Tickets for the festival had been sold out, and festival goers were pumped to see performers such as Dua Lipa, The Weekend, and Kali Uchis, among many others as Vampire Weekend, Logic and Carly Rae Jepsen.
The first day of the weekend, Kali Uchis got on the stage wearing a Versace-like suit to present his debut album, Isolation. Unfortunately, there were many technical issues due to strong winds and severe storm but anyway the Colombian-American singer offered a great show full of dance, charm, and a sexy and powerful voice. She played most of her songs -now turned into hits-, from “Miami”, the duo she shares with Tyler The Creator, “After The Storm” and “Tyrant”, in english -and without Jorja Smith- to the R&B ballads “In My Dreams” and Loner, to finish with the powerful song “Riddin Round”, a mix between soul, R&B and reggae.
Rapper Logic, St. Vincent and Zedd stirred it up on Saturday from Grant Park, Bud Light and Perry’s stages; while Australian Tash Sultana, Welsh rockers from Catfish and the Bottlemen and Colombian band Bomba Estéreo did their part on other stages, these last adding some Latin American flavor to the festival.
Before night fall, Annie Erin Clark added some rock to the third day. Changing guitars after each song and showing an incredible performance level, St. Vincent charmed festival-goers with songs such as “New York”, “Masseduction”, “Cheerleader” and “Los Ageless”. Apart from having a unique voice and playing the guitar as a goddess, Annie Clark is one of the best dressed on stage: for Lollapalooza Chicago, and in combination with her bass player and her musicians in nude overalls, the 35 year old singer combined her guitar with her dress and her gloves.
Abel Tesfaye doubled the staging he brought last year to San Isidro racecourse, with a huge blow-up head and hand on stage and a live band that drew in lots of fans. The Canadian singer and producer of The Weeknd played his hits and did his most dancing songs such “Starboy”, “Party Monster” and “The Hills”, after kicking off with his feat. Kendrick Lamar, “Pray For Me”, his most recent song.
After her show in Paris, Lollapalooza’s stages seem to suit Dua Lipa well. This time, and from Lake Shore stage, the young British singer -wearing jeans oversize jeans, a sporty dayglo yellow top and another metallic top on it- dance a lot to the sound of “Hotel Than Hell”, “New Rules” and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)”, together with dancers that added energy to her performance.
To close Sunday’s night, Perry Farrell chose an artist that has been in more than one Lolla edition. Who could be better than Jack White to bring generations together in a unique show with a lot of rock and roll and mysticism. With his back towards the audience and in front of a big clock that showed time going backwards, the artist went through his albums with a special emphasis on his last album Boarding House Reach, and some covers his other bands The Racounteurs and The White Stripes, such as “Fell in Love With a Girl”, “Ball and Biscuit” an “Seven Nation Army”, one of the post post millennial festival hymns.
See you next time, festival lovers! Now let’s wait for the lineup of Argentina next edition of Lolla, which will take place on March 29, 30 and 31 next year.
