We were at MALBA, and we visited “Perspective”, the first retrospective exhibition of the Argentine artist Jorge Macchi in the country, to show you what this exhibition is about and get you close to his art.

The proposal of the curator, Agustín Pérez Rubio, is to go through Macchi’s 25 years of production through 60 works of art in varied formats: paper, paintings, photographs, installations, and videos.

The huge works of art made of clippings that from a distance show one thing and when examined up close, as perspective changes, amaze with details that give them some other meaning, are one of the highlights of the exhibition.

Maps, all with multiple symbolisms, also stand out. And so do the murals, done with ordinary objects, such as rags or pillows, that, in turn, when the eyes look closer, hide something else, such as a gothic cathedral or a hall with classic columns.

Lights and shadows attract the audience’s attention at the video installation XYZ, where you see a typical Swiss clock at one of the corners of the room. The author also plays with the idea of light in the work “Hotel”, an acrylic painting on a wall lighted up by a lamp; but, in fact, the lamp is turned off so the drawing that decorates the wall little by little fades away.

Some of the works of art that make up the exhibition had been previously presented at important biennials around the world. However, as Macchi said when going through the exhibition: “Showing the works of art in Buenos Aires is special because here people imprint their own value to them. In Buenos Aires Tour, for instance, each person has his own story at each one of the corners represented in the subway map, and that is something that does not happen in any other country.

If you don’t know Macchi’s work or if you know it but you have never seen it live and direct, we suggest that you visit “Perspective”, a captivating and symbolic artistic tour that you will love.
