The renowned Spanish designer returned to Punta del Este, a city that she loves and where she has always come back after visiting it for the first time, almost twenty years ago. This time she came to showcase her new collection at the Six o’ Clock Tea fashion show, which took place at The Grand Hotel, a new luxury hotel facing Playa Brava. Le Banana was there and exclusively interviewed the gifted Madrid-born artist.
You’ve arrived in Punta del Este some days ago, and it’s a city that has already warmly welcomed you many times. What is it that you like the most about this place?
I love Punta del Este; it’s really a pleasure to be here. The city is growing a lot and very fast and I like that a lot.
You are showcasing your new collection. What is it about?
We are going to see a summer collection. And I believe that it is perfect for Punta del Este because it’s really relaxed, and it includes casual and comfortable clothes. Of course I would love to bring my favorite garments which are similar in style to the ones Miley Cyrus wore for the MTV Video Music Awards, but it is almost impossible to bring them here because of their size. Some time ago I was in a fashion show that took place in an exhibition in Dominican Republic and I met a great friend of mine, Jean Paul Gaultier, who had arrived there with thirty-five suitcases that were so huge that seemed to be trunks! In order to bring here my favorite dresses I would have to carry that kind of luggage and I am not sure I can…
As a designer, you don’t follow trends, where does your boost to create unique and playful pieces of clothing come from?
I always try to have a rich cultural life. I do everything that I can to achieve that, and I think that keeps me trained and stimulates my creativity.
The fashion we see in summer cities is different from the one we see in urban places, what do you think about the styles you are seeing in Punta del Este this year?
I think this city is really chic. I also believe that Punta del Este is a trendsetting city. I always remember that the first time I came here, almost twenty years ago, I was dazzled by the colorful houses and the hippie style that I could see both in fashion and in decoration, and that style was then in vogue everywhere.
I loved to see Miley Cyrus wearing two of your dresses in the MTV Video Music Awards, which is the story behind that?
Miley’s stylist, a smart girl who is also her assistant, got in touch with me and I gave her some dresses. Then Miley chose the ones she liked the most in order to do a kind of small fashion show during the Awards. The truth is I was really pleased when I saw her wearing the garments and it was something that I loved. I have always believed in my dresses, I have always worn them, I have created them myself, but it seemed that till now no one dared to wear them. I love that, at least 30 years after starting in the fashion world, people are starting to use them.
Would you like to dress any other artist?
In fact what I like the most is to dress a lot of people more than just one artist. Fortunately, I have had the pleasure that many people, even in Latin America, have something of my brand, at least a perfume, a pen, a notebook or a sheet, that is great for me.

Your best collection?
In 2011, I celebrated the 30th anniversary of my first fashion show and I chose my 30 favorite garments for the occasion. They are all very special dresses and they are not commercial, similar in style to the ones wore by Miley Cyrus for the MTV Awards.
