A must if you go to LA is the city’s Downtown, which is in the midst of a cultural and architectural resurgence.
For sure, one of the most hipster and bohemian spots of the area is the Downtown Arts District, a place that is burgeoning among warehouse wasteland and that, little by little is turning into the favorite area of creative people, with art galleries, huge street murals and shooting sets.
The neighborhood is great to walk around and find out boutiques, bars, cafes and cozy restaurants; that’s why in Le Banana we prepared a guide with the places that you can’t miss if you want to enjoy a delicious tea or meal here.
Zinc Café:
It is perfect to stop and sink in your own world, far from the noises of the city, since it has a green wild garden that allows you to get in contact with nature even in the middle of LA. Besides, it offers an irresistible weekend brunch.
Where? 580 Mateo Street. When? From Monday to Saturday 7 AM to 12 AM, Sunday 7 AM to 10 PM, Weekend Brunch: 7 AM to 2 PM
Blue Bottle:
With a stunning industrial style, Blue Bottle perfectly depicts the free and creative spirit of the Arts District, its coffees are really yummy and it offers a great variety that you can have there or take away in super original packaging.
Where? 582 Mateo St. When? From Monday to Sunday 7 AM to 6 PM.
The Springs:
It is a landmark because it was one of the first ones that opened its doors there. Located in a huge warehouse with large iron doors, it resembles a factory and it is perfect to share a big table with a group of friends. Our suggestions? Natural juices, specially the one called “Fireside”, with Apple, ginger, lemon and lime; and, if you want something different, we suggest that you try the smoothies. Our favorite one? “Sout’s honor” with strawberry, pineapple, banana, almond milk, lucuma and vanilla.
Where? 608 Mateo Street. When? From Monday to Friday from 7 AM to 8 PM you can have a juice or a coffee; if you want to eat something, you’ll have to wait till 9 AM. On Saturdays and Sundays the place opens at 9 AM, kitchen closes at 4 PM and the coffee store is opened till 6 PM.
Grand Central Market:
A bit further out of the district but in Downtown, it is Grand Central Market, it has a perfect European style and an ideal place, to know through the kitchen, the culture of Los Angeles. You can stop to eat or buy something to take away: anything from sausages or dried fruits to Chinese food.
Where? 317 S Broadway, Los Angeles. When? 8AM to 10PM
Church & State Bistro:
It was one of the first restaurants to open in the now bustling Arts District. Church & State is a French bistro located on the ground floor of the original bakery and offices of NABISCO, built in 1925. All products come from organic farms and are grown without antibiotics or hormones. Among the classics are steak frites, escargot and steak tartare. In addition, the restaurant has a full bar serving seasonal handmade cocktails and a French wine list containing many organic and biodynamic selections.
