We visited one of the most remote hotels of Easter Island: Explora Hotel. It is located at an extraordinary place, on a hill and it has a panoramic view towards the sea, the green fields, the volcanoes, and the wild horses.
The philosophy of the hotel is to explore the beautiful landscapes of the place on foot and guided by native guides who perfectly know the island and help you understand its special and enigmatic history.
What can you visit there?
The hotel offers many activities for different interests: trekking, snorkel, biking, and sailing. The visit to the quarry where moai were built is one of the must-see places of the island and it helps you to understand where the sculptures that can be seen all along the island came from.
Easter Island was formed after the eruption of three volcanoes and nowadays all of them can be visited. The one we recommend that you don’t miss is Rano Kau, its crater is impressive and you will find there the small village, Orongo, where Rapa Nui used to go during spring to choose the bird man.
Other not to be missed activity is the walk to Poike volcano. The trekking lasts between 3 and 4 hours and the best of it is the landscape which varies a lot from a green land, or a red soil that resembles Mars, to some cliffs that face a deep turquoise Pacific Ocean.
Two other must-see tours are the visit to the 15 Moai, and the Anakena and Ovahe beaches, with pink sand.
The hotel:
It has a modern architecture with a wooden and stone structure and huge windows that invite you to look at the landscapes. Weather is tropical and there are rainy days. Those days are perfect to enjoy the amenities of the hotel, relax at the open air swimming pool facing the fields, and use the hot water open air Jacuzzi. The igloo shaped sauna is also perfect to rest.
Common areas are ideal to read, connect to Wi-Fi –since rooms don’t have Internet Access-, have a drink, chat with friends, or organize next day activities with the guides.
Food:
All the meals are included in the fee of the hotel and the menu changes every day, offering two different options that might include fishes from the place, pasta, and native vegetables, accompanied by the best Chilean wines.
How to get there?
From Latin America, there are many weekly Lan flights via Santiago, and from Papeete, there is one Lan weekly flight. Once at the airport, an Explora van will take you to the hotel in just fifteen minutes.
